Three kinds of gym
- Fitness-style studios. Clean, air-conditioned and central, with scheduled group classes and English-speaking trainers. A good first step if you've never trained, and easy to fit around work or sightseeing.
- Traditional camps. Open-air rings, heavy bags and two sessions a day. Training is harder and more personal, and prices are often lower, but camps are usually further from the centre.
- Mixed martial arts gyms. Muay Thai alongside boxing, BJJ and MMA. Handy if you want to cross-train. See boxing and MMA gyms in Bangkok.
What a session looks like
A typical class lasts 60 to 90 minutes: skipping or running, shadowboxing, pad rounds with a trainer, bag work, then clinch or conditioning. Beginners are welcome almost everywhere. Bring water and a towel; most gyms lend gloves, and hand wraps cost little to buy on site.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Drop-in, class pack or monthly? Visitors usually start with a single class. Packs of 10 bring the price down.
- Group or private? Private sessions cost more but move you along quickly.
- How do I get there? In Bangkok, a gym a short walk from a BTS or MRT station is worth paying more for.
- What time are the classes? Many studios run early-morning and evening classes for office workers; camps train in the morning and late afternoon.
